For the first race of 2021, Amathus returned to Wath-Upon-Dearne, Several Northern teams gathered to celebrate the return of dragon boat racing after a break of almost 2 years.
The community gathered together for an opening ceremony and a celebration of being back on the water together. Teams assembled on the water to take part in a traditional eye dotting ceremony. The dragons were awake and ready to begin their racing. With each dragon presented with a pearl ( a symbol of a true dragon in Chinese culture and tradition), it was time to race for all 8 crews. A procession of boats followed the opening ceremony showcasing our sport to specially invited guests including key figures from our sport and local community.
During this highly successful race event, Amathus performed exceptionally well with the open crew winning both the 200m and 1600m competitions. Both men and women 12 man crews placing 2nd in their 200m competitions.
